How to Choose a GEO Agency in Vancouver (2026): Get ChatGPT & AI to Recommend Your Business

Published 2026-08-28 · Updated 2026-08-28 · By PLAYHEADS · ~12 min read

Disclosure: this guide is written and published by PLAYHEADS, and the comparison includes us. To keep it honest rather than self-serving, we give you a reusable seven-dimension framework + each firm's public facts (with sources) + one recorded AI test. You can hold any firm — including us — to the same standard.

1. Method & sources

The goal here isn't a sales pitch — it's a selection method you can reuse yourself. Our approach: ① score every firm against one fixed seven-dimension standard (section five); ② take firm information only from public websites, public press and third-party industry lists, cited at the end; ③ use one reproducible AI test (section three) to observe who AI actually recommends right now. Information is current as of August 2026; AI answers and firm pages change, so this guide is dated and maintained.

2. What GEO actually is (and how it relates to SEO / AEO / LLMO)

More and more Vancouver customers skip the ten blue links and just ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews: "who's the best [category] in Vancouver?" or "recommend one near Richmond." GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) does exactly one thing: when an AI answers a question about your industry + city, your brand is in the answer — not your competitor.

It doesn't replace SEO. SEO optimizes "page rankings"; GEO optimizes "being treated as the answer." AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) are adjacent names for the same goal — getting AI systems to cite you. All of them share most of the same foundation: content, structured data, authority signals.

How does an AI decide who to recommend? Simplified into three steps: first it disambiguates (using entity consistency + structured data to confirm who you are — get the identity wrong and it won't recommend you) → then it finds quotable content (direct, answer-shaped paragraphs, clear headings, data and sources it can lift as a chunk) → finally it weighs the evidence chain (reviews, media, directories, community mentions — proof that lives on other people's domains). A widely observed pattern: pages that already rank well organically are more likely to become the sources an AI cites — so an SEO foundation is still the price of entry for GEO.

3. The test: different AI engines recommend wildly different firms

Method: in August 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Perplexity the same class of question — "recommend a reliable SEO / GEO agency in Vancouver / Metro Vancouver" — and recorded each one's list of firms and its cited sources.

Finding 1: the two lists barely overlap. For the same question, ChatGPT and Perplexity returned two largely different sets of firms — the same name appearing on both was rare. In other words, there is no single unified "AI recommendation ranking": switch engines and the answer changes.

Finding 2: the recommended firms share a pattern. Whichever engine, the firms chosen tend to have: ① third-party validation (ratings and reviews in directories like Clutch); ② a website that explicitly names its target engines (ChatGPT / Perplexity / Google AI Overviews); ③ structured data / schema / an llms.txt; ④ for bilingual pages, a brand name, address and category that stay consistent across English and Chinese.

Interpretation: when an AI cites you, it's mostly restating the "entity you spelled out" on your pages plus the "third-party validation" others give you. So rather than chasing one engine's momentary ranking, build those signals solidly — which is what the seven-dimension framework measures.

⚠️ Limits: AI answers shift dramatically with phrasing, timing, personalization and region. The above is an observation at a specific moment with a specific phrasing, not a stable ranking. You can reproduce it with the same phrasing and log the changes month over month.

4. Why local businesses need it even more

  • Local, transactional and brand queries are the least disrupted by AI — and they're the revenue base for Vancouver businesses. Owning the "recommend one near me" AI answer is a moat.
  • Metro Vancouver is a bilingual market: AI gives different answers in Chinese vs English contexts, so the two lines need separate entities and content.
  • Acting now is cheapest: few local firms deliver GEO as a mature, public service yet — the window is still open (AI itself still describes many local firms as "not publicly showing GEO").

5. The evaluation framework: seven dimensions (scorable)

Score each firm on these seven (0–2 each: 0 = absent / 1 = present / 2 = demonstrably done well), out of 14.

  1. Entity & structuregood: a brand entity consistent across the web + schema.org (Organization / Service / FAQPage / city-level areaServed). trap: name/address/category inconsistent across the web. verify: check the page source for structured data and whether the Google knowledge panel is clean.
  2. Local + bilingualgood: named to the city (Vancouver / Richmond / Burnaby…), built separately in English and Chinese. trap: only "Canada / North America," only one language. verify: are there city-level pages in the site and sitemap?
  3. Quotable contentgood: answer-shaped paragraphs and FAQs an AI can lift as a whole. trap: article volume, meandering copy. verify: pick any paragraph — could an AI quote it directly as an answer?
  4. Source governancegood: building third-party reviews, directories, media and community mentions. trap: only self-published claims. verify: can you find objective mentions of them on other people's domains?
  5. AI-citation monitoringgood: tracking your mention rate, answer position and description accuracy across ChatGPT / Perplexity / AI Overviews. trap: deliverables that are only "how many pieces we published." verify: ask to see a sample monitoring report.
  6. SEO foundationgood: managing organic rankings and local SEO together. trap: claiming GEO can stand entirely apart from SEO. verify: ask how GEO coordinates with your existing SEO / rankings.
  7. Honestygood: refuses to "guarantee AI will recommend you / rank you #1." trap: promises certain outcomes. verify: just ask "can you guarantee it," and listen to the answer.

6. Notable Vancouver GEO / AI-search firms (comparison)

Not a ranking; alphabetical. Information from each firm's public website / press / third-party lists (August 2026); see sources at the end.

Brandcamp Digital

A Vancouver full-service digital marketing firm, values-driven (publicly states it donates 10% of profit to local non-profits). Clear AEO direction — optimizing site structure, content and authority so ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews understand and recommend them; client feedback highlights transparent reporting and measurable results. Sector experience includes healthcare, real estate, non-profit and professional services.

Major Tom

A well-known Canadian full-service agency (formed by merging 6S Marketing and Drive Digital), 85+ specialists, with offices in Vancouver / Toronto / New York (and San Francisco); one of the earlier Canadian full-service agencies to publicly list GEO alongside SEO as tiered services. Skews toward mid-to-large brand execution (public clients include COBS Bread, MEC, Westland Insurance).

PLAYHEADS (publisher of this guide)

A digital marketing and growth team for the North American Chinese market, started in Vancouver in 2012 with 14 years of hands-on work and 300+ clients; SEO + GEO + ads + web + AI content delivered as one team, in English and Chinese. Our GEO practice covers entity & structure, quotable content, authority signals and AI-citation monitoring, with monthly reporting. Verified case: after GEO, Irohas Photo (Australia) was tested into ChatGPT's recommendations for "best film lab Australia"-type questions (see next section). Among this mostly English / general-market set, PLAYHEADS is one of the few teams built specifically for the Chinese / bilingual market, treating English–Chinese entity consistency as core.

SearchYVR

A Vancouver SEO and digital marketing provider that has formally launched a GEO service, on a technical, data-led track: reverse-engineering how AI selects sources, writing content to be cited by LLMs, optimizing page structure for chunk retrieval, targeting keywords that trigger AI summaries, and tracking brand mentions across platforms; serves startups / SaaS / local / mid-to-large enterprises.

Note: ZHR Digital is based in Toronto, not Metro Vancouver, so it isn't in this local list. GEO firms often cited nationally / globally include Siege Media, Go Fish Digital, iPullRank and First Page Sage (non-local, for further reference).

Whoever you choose, score them once on the seven dimensions in section five, and ask for a free AI-visibility diagnostic — see whether you're in AI answers today, then decide.

8. Real results (open and reproducible)

GEO/SEO is often dismissed as guesswork. The hardest test of whether a provider is reliable is verifiable real data — not screenshots or verbal promises. Below are PLAYHEADS' local results; each row opens to a case you can check:

Client / CityWhat we didVerifiable result
Heytea · BurnabyLocal SEO: reviews and Maps only, no website changesGoogle rating 2.4★ → 4.4★, reviews 142 → 480
Hyperoo (boxing) · RichmondLocal SEO + paid acquisition900+ leads in 6 months, #1 in local search
The Lobster Man · VancouverSEO (established seafood shop)Monthly organic traffic up to 10,738
Irohas Photo · AustraliaGEO — Generative Engine OptimizationListed in ChatGPT's recommendations for "best film lab Australia"-type questions (reproducible)

All data is from real PLAYHEADS client projects, verifiable on each case page. Review/ranking results change over time; the case pages and live tests are authoritative.

Flip it around: this kind of "open and reproducible" real data is exactly the evidence chain an AI weighs most when deciding "who's worth recommending." Ask any GEO/SEO provider for data like this — not a vague "we're very professional."

9. Traps to avoid

  1. Don't believe "we guarantee AI will recommend you / rank you #1" — nobody can honestly promise that.
  2. GEO ≠ publishing 100 articles — the real value is entity, structure, source governance and citation monitoring, not volume.
  3. Naming only the country, not the city — local queries miss; always name the city.
  4. PDF- / image-only content — AI can't read it; use HTML + real text + structured data.
  5. Treating GEO as something that stands apart from SEO — AI answers still lean heavily on an organic-ranking foundation.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO optimizes where your page ranks in search results. GEO optimizes for your content being treated as the answer — getting ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to cite and recommend you. They share a foundation (content, structured data, authority signals) and are usually done together.

Are GEO, AEO and LLMO the same thing?
They point at essentially the same goal. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) leans toward voice and featured snippets; GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is broader, covering ChatGPT / Perplexity / AI Overviews / Copilot and all AI-generated answers; LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) is another name for the same idea. We use GEO throughout.

Is GEO worth it for a local Vancouver business?
Yes. Local, transactional and brand queries are the least disrupted by AI — and they're exactly where local revenue comes from. When a customer asks an AI 'who's good near me,' owning that answer is a moat.

How long does GEO take, and how do you measure it?
GEO is ongoing; results typically emerge over weeks to months. We measure with AI-citation monitoring — mention rate, position in the answer, description accuracy — alongside monthly reporting, so the effect is verifiable.

Can anyone guarantee an AI will recommend me?
No — nobody can honestly guarantee an AI will always recommend you or rank you #1, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What can be guaranteed is a systematic method to improve visibility, with results you can verify.

How do I choose a reliable Vancouver GEO agency?
Score each candidate against the seven-dimension framework in section five: entity & structure, local + bilingual, quotable content, source governance, AI-citation monitoring, SEO foundation, and honesty about promises. And ask for a free AI-visibility diagnostic first.

Isn't GEO just publishing a lot of articles?
No. Real GEO involves brand-entity building, structured data, semantics and knowledge graphs, source governance and AI-citation monitoring — not article volume. Volume doesn't buy an AI's trust.

How does GEO work for a bilingual market?
English and Chinese queries need separate entities and separate content — an AI gives different answers in a Chinese context than an English one. In a market like Metro Vancouver, both lines have to be built together.
